William Carbonaro is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Notre Dame. During his time at Notre Dame, Professor Carbonaro’s research has examined two main areas: (1) how unequal learning opportunities both within and between schools affect student outcomes, and (2) how education and cognitive skills are linked with economic rewards in the labor market. Professor Carbonaro’s recent papers focus on how friendship and peer relationships affect student outcomes. His current work examines how much schools matter for achievement growth in elementary and middle school. Using three-level growth models, he finds that most variation in achievement growth varies between, not within schools, which suggests that schools matter more for learning that prior research suggests.
