The Journal of Modern European History

Published since 2003, The Journal of Modern European History is a major outlet for scholarly research and debate on the diverse and interconnected history of Europe from the 18th century to the present. The journal covers all fields and subdisciplines of history, including political, cultural, social, economic, intellectual, gender and environmental history, as well as the history of science. We are particularly interested in articles that put their topic in a broad European perspective or have a comparative and/or transnational perspective. We encourage articles that address Europe’s entanglements with its colonial past, international institutions, or other global connections, or that include histories from countries and regions that are often underrepresented in scholarship.

The Journal of Modern European History features three different types of publications:

1. Special Issues: We regularly publish issues consisting of research articles with a specific thematic focus. We invite external scholars to submit short proposals for special issues which should outline the rationale behind the thematic focus and abstracts of the planned contributions.

2. Forums: In this section, we address current controversies and public debates about European history. We publish single articles as well as collections of short essays and roundtables relating to a controversial topic, methodological focus, or current debate.

3. Individual Research Articles: In this section, we publish research articles from all fields and subdisciplines covered by the journal (see above). We welcome contributions that address issues of broader interest including theory, methodology, historiography, and comparison, and choose transnational approaches.

The JMEH only accepts original contributions that have not been previously published or will be submitted or published elsewhere. The journal is published in English only. However, authors wishing to submit articles in languages other than English may, after consultation with the Editor, first submit a short abstract of the article in English (about 500 words). Thus, full translation into English will only be needed once a manuscript is accepted. All submissions will be evaluated in a two-step, double-blind process with external peer reviewers.
