Adam Matthew publishes UK government Foreign Office files exposing a unique history of the Middle East in the 1970s
“Foreign Office Files for the Middle East, 1971-1981 - there is simply no other place where one can find the same breadth and depth of historical records for the region online”
– Michael Gasper, Occidental College
(Marlborough, UK) Containing complete runs of Foreign Office files from the UK government's official archives, this timely online collection provides an expansive and unique view of key events across the region, and their impact on global politics and everyday life.
Foreign Office Files for the Middle East details internal and external affairs and conflicts, from invasions and civil wars to revolutions and revolts, all of which shaped and gave rise to the modern Middle East.
With documents (despatches, reports, annual reviews) written by diplomats and civil servants working in the regions’ most politically sensitive countries, researchers can explore in-depth analyses from the personnel 'on the ground' as well as understand the global reactions to events during this period.
Highlights of the collection include: personality profiles on key figures in the Middle East in the 1970s, reviews on external political relationships and analysis of economies, in addition to documents on:
• The Iran-Iraq War
• The 1973 Arab-Israeli War, Henry Kissinger’s ‘shuttle diplomacy’ and the Camp David Accords
• The uprising in Dhofar
• The Iranian Revolution and the hostage 'crisis' at the United States embassy
• The formation of the UAE after the withdrawal of British forces from the Persian Gulf
• General Grivas’ military coup in Cyprus
Editorial consultant, Michael Gasper, commented:
“This is essential for anyone interested in learning about any aspect of the history of the Middle East during the 1970s.”
