The Journal of Power and Energy, Part A of the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, is a peer reviewed journal covering energy conversion systems, including power generation, and use in energy systems. The Journal of Power and Energy is dedicated to energy conversion thermo-fluid systems, but it also considers contributions in the fields of novel and smart energy systems, renewable energies, and energy storage. Specifically, the journal covers research focusing on all aspects of power and energy, from the analysis, modelling and prediction, to technology design and their O&M challenges. To this end, the Journal is also open to Artificial Intelligence based contributions power and energy specific.

In a view to enlighten the transformation of mechanical engineering in power sector to support UN's Sustainable Development Goals, e.g. SDG 7 (Affordable and clean energy), SGD 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), papers reviewing power and energy systems from a strategic, and environmental standpoint are also welcome.

The Journal of Power and Energy, Part A of the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, is dedicated to publishing papers of high scientific quality or technical content, contributing to advancements of the technology of energy conversion systems.

Areas of focus include:

Power and Energy Systems

  • Power generation using innovative and conventional sources including (fossil, nuclear, and renewable sources),
  • Wind, ocean and solar energy conversion,
  • Advanced, innovative and integrated power systems, and energy storage,
  • Fuel cells, IC Engines (non-automotive) and gen-sets,
  • Thermal and mechanical (and not exclusively electrical) aspects of energy networks.

Power and Energy System Components

  • Gas turbines, steam turbines, wind turbines, and incompressible flow turbines,
  • Compressors, blowers, fans, and pumps,
  • Boilers, heat recovery steam generators,
  • Heat pipes, heat exchangers and cooling systems (in industrial and civil applications).

Power and Energy System Issues

  • Power and energy decarbonization including efficiency improvements and CO2 capture and storage and emission reduction,
  • Bio-fuels, e-fuels and fuel flexibility,
  • Power-to-Hydrogen technologies,
  • Waste-to-energy technologies,
  • Power and energy O&M lifetime extension, health monitoring and safety management,
  • Decommissioning, disposal and storage of nuclear plant and material,
  • Changes in infrastructure, transmission and distribution.

From the viewpoint of techniques and methods, the journal covers, not exclusively, the following:

  • Fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, numerical modeling including heat transfer and combustion,
  • Data-driven methods and AI-based reduced order modeling,
  • Energy system instrumentations and diagnostics,
  • Energy system simulation,
  • Thermo-economic optimisation,
  • Life cycle analysis.
