Researching the Visual

Second Edition

December 2012 | 296 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
This second edition provides an excellent overview of the field by covering the traditional themes and current trends in image centred photographic visual inquiry but extends this by demonstrating the rich possibilities available through the analysis of everyday objects, places and interactions. The book includes chapters on researching 2D and 3D visual data, along with lived and living visual data, and also features a brand new chapter on researching the virtual world of the internet.

Drawing on theoretical traditions as diverse as semiotics, ethnomethodology, symbolic interactionism and material culture studies, the second edition provides an invaluable guide for researchers interested in conducting innovative visual inquiry. Packed with exercises and projects, the book makes it easy for students to undertake their own research with limited resources and budget. The new edition also features helpful icons alerting researchers to important ethical considerations that are vital in the field of visual research.

Generously illustrated with images and diagrams, this new edition is the perfect companion to those doing projects, dissertations or theses involving visual research.

I have enjoyed using this book and I find it very comprehensive in terms of different types of visual data. It has a good practical approach and considers analysis which is something lacking sometimes in texts on visual methods.

This textbook is accessible and highly informative in approach. It brings alive the importance of using visual methods as a method of data collection. Highly recommended.

This book offers a clear overview of what visual methods are, what they can be used for, and offers many examples along the way. It's on the suggested reading list for my students who are interested in this.

Like the Rose text.

For my course I was looking for a book that focusses more on photography and journalism. Parts of this book are usable, but most of it serves another public and another goal. But besides that: it is a very good introduction in theoretical traditions on visual research and I will recommend the book to some of my students who are, for their thesis, working on visual research.

This book is a great reference for our students doing their thesis and final projects. The University library was requested to acquire copies.
