This sixth edition is the most comprehensive update since it was first published in 1984, with 15 newly contributed chapters and 8 updated chapters. Each approach now includes a new Research section summarising the research findings, an in-depth Case Study illustrating how that approach works in practice, and an extended Practice section. Also covered:
· historical context and development

A wonderful comprehensive guide to all lecturers teaching on an Honours Degree Programme in Counselling and Psychotherapy. A little heavy laden for students, but well equipped to aid the lecturer with detailed and up to date information and research on the subject.
Gives a clear, cogent overview of a range of therapies offered today, and I feel that this book could be suitable for pre and post registration students alike. I will be adopting it as recommended reading within a Psychological interventions module as part of the Mental Health Nursing Undergraduate programme, as well as a forthcoming CPD module, commencing later this year.
This is an excellent book having material relevant to several modules on the BSc. Psychology Programme and also the FdSc. Mental Health Practice modules covering therapeutic interventions.
Highly recommended.
An excellent resource for doctoral trainees.
This is a very accessible book especially useful for health professionals with lots of examples, highlighted sections
I have found this book very useful to offer my students an “enough deep” introduction to the most important approaches to psychological treatments. Although the book is framed the Britain context, the majority therapeutic models reviewed are also popular in Spain. I have appreciated the book puts every psychotherapeutic tradition in a cultural and historical context. Also, the fact that each chapter has the same structure allows an easy search of the critical themes and a useful way to make easier the comparisons between approaches. I have specially appreciated the inclusion of relatively new therapeutic approaches, like the covered by Part IV and Part V of the handbook, as well as the two chapters dedicated to “Professional Issues”. Finally, the case examples included in every chapter devoted to the therapeutic approaches offer a great illustration of the therapeutic process and outcomes. I definitely will include this book in the recommended readings of my Psychotherapy course.
The essential handbook to turn to for a clear introduction to UK modalities and more - some really useful additions in the new edition.
This has been a core text for a number of years now and the new edition will continue to be a firm favourite with students.
Still the best resource for students new to the subject.
Great text. Not only presents a number of main therapeutic orientations, but also acknowledges the more recent developments in individual therapy which makes this an up-to-date valuable resource.
