Unique in its concept, the book is a comprehensive guide to the life and work of some of the key thinkers particularly influential in the current 'spatial turn' in the social sciences.
Providing a synoptic overview of different ideas about the role of space and place in contemporary social, cultural, political and economic life, each portrait comprises:
- Biographical information and theoretical context.
- An explication of their contribution to spatial thinking.
- An overview of key advances and controversie.
- Guidance on further reading.
With 14 additional chapters including entries on Saskia Sassen, Tim Ingold, Cindi Katz and John Urry, the book covers ideas ranging from humanism, Marxism, feminism and post-structuralism to queer-theory, post-colonialism, globalization and deconstruction, presenting a thorough look at diverse ways in which space and place has been theorized.
An essential text for geographers, this now classic reference text is for all those interested in theories of space and place, whether in geography, sociology, cultural studies, urban studies, planning, anthropology, or women's studies.
An excellent book that clearly reviews the contributions of many of the leading writers and researchers in Human Geography and the related disciplines.
Very well written introduction. Suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as any researcher in the field of spatial sociology.
Hopefully there will be a 3rd edition!
Only as supplemental reading as it only introduces spatial theoreticians without providing their texts or excerpts thereof. Good for overview purposes!
This is a really good overview of the main theorists in the area - invaluable for students who need to place their studies in a wider context
Will be recomended as a text reference for the library. However, level of detail is not not suitable as a textbook for the course
useful resource outlining a range of approaches to place
A good encyclopaedic tool and comprehensive source to anyone with interest in the development of spatial theory
New edition, but the same great book. A pleasure to read and useful for teaching.
This is an excellent over-view of many of the main thinkers. The 1st Edition was good, but the 2nd edition has surpassed this - which is fantastic!
very good to use, although it would be helpful to read more about the concrete phenomena of popular music spaces and places.
Fully revised and updated, this new edition includes 14 additional chapters including entries on Saskia Sassen, Tim Ingold,
Cindi Katz and John Urry.
