The Changing Nature of Learning

A comprehensive and engaging text covering the theorists, philosophies and ideologies for students, practitioners and teachers of Early Childhood Care and Education. All this is clearly related to practice. The final chapter explores the changing nature of learning taking account of new interests, landscapes and how these are affecting the sector and practitioners. This is very pertinent, current and valuable. A great text for those studying the subject at any level.

Very useful summaries of most key theories. It is a shame however that Bowlby is omitted - his work is essential to understanding what can get in the way of learning during childhood.

A text that is really useful in supporting our Year 1 foundation degree students to understand theories of learning and see connections between theorists ideas. Very easy to engage with their writing style.

very well structured overview of learning theories , including historical perspective and links to philosophy of learning. Useful definitions, and exercises to develop understanding. Weblinks are useful for further reading/ learning but may of course become outdated. Some of the exercises have been useful for consideration of underpinning thinking in seminars and lectures- effective as talking points.

A great guide for learners studying childhood, includes a comprehensive insight into theories whilst also linking to contemporary views. Examples at the end of chapters particularly useful with suggestions of further reading.

This book provides a detailed yet accessible account of both classic and contemporary learning theories, and is a useful text for prospective early years practitioners. The exercises throughout the book allow the reader to apply theory to practice - I would recommend this for any student who is struggling to get to grips with developmental theories.

This text offers a foundation of knowledge towards childhood development guided by key theorists in the field. I particularly like the companion website which offers the addition of journal articles which support each chapter. When trialling this text with Foundation Degree students, they enjoyed the examples and summary sections throughout as this supported their understanding.
