September 2011 | 136 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
Managing the behaviour of young children can be a real challenge, this book provides you with 100 tried and tested ideas for the long, medium and short term. It shows how to select and adopt the right approach, how to analyze, reflect on and modify practice to ensure consistency and fairness and that positive behaviour develops.

Each of the 100 ideas focuses on a single strategy, and looks at:

- structures and systems;

- using fun, child-orientated resources;

- rewarding good behaviour, and managing sanctions;

- the advanftages of various approaches;

- case studies from practice;

- adaptations of strategies for different settings and ages.

The book suggests lively strategies that keep behaviour management fresh and effective. Advice is given to support children with Special Educational Needs and examples of behaviour management in different settings are shared.

'A truly inspiring read! A practical, supportive resource for the conscientious practitioner who acknowledges and embraces an holistic approach to behaviour management within working practice'
- Julie Bollington, Early Years Practitioner

'Emily Bullock is a teacher in an international school in Hong King and Simon Brownhill is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Derby. Together, with contributions from Helen Wilson, they have managed to bring together 100 tried and tested ideas to support effective behaviour management of children aged 3-8 and to present them in a fresh and accessible format.The book is divided into 10 chapters covering topics such as teachers' management strategies, 'handy' strategies, structures and approaches and 'personal' behaviour management. The activities are all laid out using the same format and cover a very wide range of activities, with explicit guidelines to support their use. Many of these ideas will be familiar to practitioners, but the value of this book is in the ways the authors provide a rationale for their use. They list adaptations and questions for consideration, prompting a reflective approach to the choice of appropriate activities for specific purposes.

By providing 10 activities in each chapter, the reader has plenty of choice and I can see this being a useful resource book for SENCO's to have to use in supporting class teachers. The book also includes some useful behavioural observation sheets with a checklist of points to consider'
- SEN Magazine

'This book is exactly what it claims to be...Those practitioners and teachers who are seriously looking for tried and tested as well as new and innovative ways of managing young children's behaviour will find the price well worth paying'
