International Perspectives in the Early Years
- Linda Miller - The Open University
- Claire Cameron - UCL Institute of Education, UK
Stemming from original research in the field, a range of expert contributors explore the key themes and debates surrounding international perspectives on Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC). Drawing on studies carried out in Norway, Mexico, France, Hungary and many more countries, the book covers a wide range of topics including:
- the relationship between early childhood and primary education
- gender and play in ECEC
- curriculum
- inclusion
- early interventions
- working with families
- place-based learning
With case studies, detailed suggestions for further reading at different levels and discussion points, this is a key text for students of Early Years at all levels, from Foundation Degree to Masters, as well as current early years practitioners.
Linda Miller is Professor Emeritus of Early Years, The Open University.
Claire Cameron is Senior Reader in Education at the Thomas Coram Research Unit, Institute of Education, University of London.
Excellent text. Much needed reflective comparisons between our education system and other systems, understandings and beliefs. It will enable students to develop an important wider perspective on what happens in education.
The book is well structured, with a good layout for teaching purposes, including summaries and suggested questions at the end of each chapter. Its' key themes are the construction of early childhood education and care, intervention in the lives of families and children and children's spaces. While the book title refers to ' international' perspectives, it is mainly European with one Mexican case study so is more limited than I expected from the title. For this reason it is not suitable as a Core text, however it does provide a useful resource.
A very practical text, which is proving useful for students on undergraduate early years provision.
Excellent book very popular with students will recommend again this year
Proved very useful for Comparative Childhoods module in conjunction with an international field trip to Ghana. Chapter 10 on agency and well-being promoted some lively discussion and thoughtful reflections.
A particularly useful text for our International Comparisons module. The mainly thematic approach enables students to make comparisons across countries and to reflect on common, contemporary issues.
A useful book to support the internationalization of early years modules to enhance student understanding of the varying approaches in the sector.
A great text, useful for Level 3 onewards.
Clear engaging, accessible all the things that we expect from Linda Miller. A great book for practice, study and development.
This book looks at a number of very important issues such as outdoor play, gender in play and the role of the environment in children's learning.
A brilliant text for students to be able to gain valuable knowledge and insights into curricula and societal perspectives other than their own.
