Qualitative Methodology
A Practical Guide

Additional resources:

January 2014 | 288 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
Fresh, insightful and clear, this exciting textbook provides an engaging introduction to the application of qualitative methodology in the real world.

Expert researchers then trace the history and philosophical underpinnings of different methodologies, explore the specific demands each places upon the researcher and robustly set out relevant issues surrounding quality and rigor.   Featured methodologies include action research, discourse analysis, ethnography, grounded theory, case studies and narrative inquiry.

This practical book provides a helpful guide to the research process - it introduces the relevant methods of generating, collecting and analysing data for each discrete methodology and then looks at best practice for presenting findings. This enables new researchers to compare qualitative methods and to confidently select the approach most appropriate for their own research projects.

Key features include:
  • Summary table for each chapter - allowing quick checks to test knowledge
  • 'Window into' sections - real world examples showing each methodology in action
  • Student activities
  • Learning objectives
  • Full glossary
  • Annotated suggestions for further reading
  • Links to downloadable SAGE articles
  • Links to relevant websites and organizations

This is an invaluable resource for students and researchers across the social sciences and a must-have guide for those embarking on a research project.

A New Era of Qualitative Research

Helpful overview of qualitative methods from a health/nursing perspective - useful for discussions where students are covering similar issues and subject matter.

The subtitle of this book says it all: It is a basic, but very thorough practical guide to the different qualitative research methodologies. Especially for students designing their first qualitative research study it is an excellent helpful introduction to these methodologies. It is written in a very user-friendly and understandable style. The usefulness as a textbook is enhanced by the inclusion of the many student activities, critical thinking questions and practical qualitative research examples. Highly recommended for undergraduate students. For post-graduate students I prefer a more advanced textbook.

A good basic guide to a range of qualitative research methodologies

This book is particularly useful during the early stage of designing a qualitative study. Using a scaffoldings approach it addresses the foundations of qualitative research followed by an examination of the different qualitative methodologies. The third and final section concludes with a number of practical strategies for planning a research study. Certainly useful to a range of students in particular the novice but equally those more experienced that require an accessible source of reference.

This book is ideal for undergraduate students embarking on a qualitative research project for the first time. The chapters are littered with practical examples and the activities and critical thinking questions allow the student to apply the key concepts to their own research in a way that de-mystifies the research process.

I am using one general textbook for qualitative and quantitative research and one another textbook for internet research. Jane Mills' book Qualitative Research will complete this set and give my students broader view on qualitative research.
