Edited by:

October 2010 | 208 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
Written from a unique interprofessional perspective, this book is an essential introduction to working with children, young people and families. It covers policy, practice and theory, exploring key themes and developments, including:

- poverty and disadvantage

- ethical practice

- child development

- education

- child protection

- children and young people's rights

- doing research.

The book introduces students to a range of theoretical perspectives, links the key themes to the existing and emerging policy and practice context and supports students in engaging with and evaluating the central debates.

With case studies, reflective questions and sources of further reading, this is an ideal text for students taking courses in childhood studies, working with children, young people and families, interprofessional children's services, early years, youth work and social work.

This book title shares the same name as the title of the Foundation Degree we deliver so scores very highly with the students. There is a agood range of subjects covered by the authors. The subjects are relavnt to the course of study so make this a useful text book to have. An evaluation of the content judges it to be well laid out, easy to read and follow, set at an appropriate level to engage studentsin higher level study.

As a Practice Educator I have used this book to refresh and reflect on my knowledge as well as suggesting students read specific chapters; when preparing lectures this book has also been an informative text.

Sorry - safeguarding (ch7) and school councils (ch6) were quite useful, but not enough depth otherwise to become recommended.
