Olivier Gascuel Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France

Dr. Olivier Gascuel is the director of research at the CNRS and a pioneer of bioinformatics. He directs the center of bioinformatics, biostatistics and interactive biology at the Institut Pasteur. A mathematician and computer scientist by training, Olivier Gascuel became interested in molecular biology in 1985, becoming a "bio-computer scientist" at a time when the term was not yet invented. He is the author of more than 150 scientific publications and software used today in many fields including biology, medicine, and environmental science. In 2009, Olivier Gascuel won the CNRS Silver Medal in Computer Science. His recent work focuses on pathogens, including HIV-AIDS.
