Constructing Grounded Theory

Second Edition

March 2014 | 416 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
Kathy Charmaz presents the definitive guide to doing grounded theory from a constructivist perspective. This second edition of her groundbreaking text retains the accessibility and warmth of the first edition whilst introducing cutting edge examples and practical tips.

This expanded second edition:

- explores how to effectively focus on data collection

- demonstrates how to use data for theorizing

- adds two new chapters that guide you through conducting and analysing interviews in grounded theory

- adds a new chapter on symbolic interactionism and grounded theory

- considers recent epistemological debates about the place of prior theory

- discusses the legacy of Anselm Strauss for grounded theory.

This is a seminal title for anyone serious about understanding and doing grounded theory research.

Excellent text for students wishing to gain greater understanding of GT, however, with L5 students qualitative methodologies are only just being introduced.

If I was running a course on grounded theory this would be the key text. As I am involved in a research methods module where grounded theory is one of the many methods to be discussed I would strongly recommend it to students before they embark on a project using grounded theory. This text explains all aspects of using grounded theory. Students would not need any other texts to understand this method and how it can be used in research.

This is an excellent revision of what was already a very good text. The additional chapters and updating of content is sure to be a help to anyone wanting to get to grip with this complex methodology. Similarly, learners seeking a text that gives detail in how they may adopt grounded theory methods into the analysis of qualitative data won't be disappointed.
