Diversity, Equality and Achievement in Education
- Gianna Knowles - London South Bank University, UK
- Vini Lander - University of Chichester, UK
This book looks at real issues that affect teachers in the classroom, and examines a variety of influences affecting child development. It provides you with the theoretical and practical information you need to ensure you understand the complex factors which affect the children in your care, and it encourages good, thoughtful teaching. Dealing with some of the less widely addressed aspects of diversity and inclusion, the book considers:
- children who are asylum seekers
- the notion of 'pupil voice'
- what diversity and equality mean in practice
- gender and achievement
- looked-after children
- social class
- disability
- ethnicity and whiteness
This book is essential reading for any education student looking at diversity and inclusion, and for teachers in role looking for advice on how to meet the professional standards.
Excellent text - covers lots of very important aspects of equality and diversity. Good introductory, yet comprehensive text.
This book has excellent links to websites. There are good overviews, relevant activities and case studies. Will definately use and recommend wholeheartedly to students.
I love this book! Every single chapter is so relevant for our students on the two modules about inclusion matters, an inclusive society and diversity. The case studies, activities and questions for discussion will enhance our current studies. It is very readable and very interesting and I can't wait to being using it.

Useful introductions to key issues that affect educational disadvantage in a range of communities
An interesting book that extends the thinking of more advanced students. We have also used it amongst staff to promote thinking about inclusion in HE.
An interesting read - a little too indepth for FdA students but a good read for teachers / lecturers!
The text covers a broad spectrum of diversity issues and is very helpful when working with 3rd year undergraduate students engaged in final disseration research projects as well as with foundation degree and under gradutate honours degree students studing inclusion. The chapters on refugee, traveller and looked after children were of particular interest to students.
Useful in offering a basic understanding of the Social/Medical Model of Disability and some useful case studies to work with too!
This is a very thoughtful title which is suitable for anyone in the educational field to discuss in context. There are particular chapters relevant to the structure of our academic offer and as such it was decided to make it a supplmental resource.
