Evaluating the Effects of the 2021 Expansion of the Child Tax Credit

Edited by:

January 2024 | SAGE Publications, Inc

The 2021 American Rescue Plan Act temporarily transformed the federal Child Tax Credit into a more generous, accessible, and frequently distributed cash payment. Though the expansion expired after 2021, its effects continue to inspire active debate around its reinstatement, as well as the creation of similar state-level policies. How should we understand the Child Tax Credit expansion in historical and comparative context? What did it achieve, what did it not, and what insights can inform future policy? Research proliferated almost immediately following the policy change as scholars set out to understand its effects on poverty, food hardship, employment, mental health, family expenditures, and more. This volume provides a collection of independent reviews of this evidence from subject matter experts. It offers a central source for understanding the effects of the U.S.’s brief experiment with a near-universal cash benefit for children and considerations for a more permanent child allowance in future.
