Health and Well-Being Across the Life Course
- Mary Larkin - De Montfort University, UK, Open University, UK
Mary Larkin's book will be essential reading for students on the many courses that need an understanding of health and well-being across all age groups. It will also be an invaluable resource for those in the health and social care sector as well as practitioners working in the field.
A most informative book for learners reading into Community health promotion. Statistics are easy to read and understand; learners favour the A5 page size as this is not too overwhelming where data and stats are presented.
Bite size chapters enable learners to focus quickly on succinct and concise content to aid them in research and assignment writing.
This is a very useful guide to key influences on health and well being across a broad population. As such it is a handy place to start for my students and it contains useful demographic research which students could refer to. The focus is a little too broad and shallow to be a core text for my module, but this is only because the focus of the module is more on social determinants.
A valuable resource for teaching staff involved in the delivery of life course content. This text draws together contemporary ideas and evidence from a national and international perspective.
I have read the book with a great interest in the interdisciplinary approach it endorses. 'Mary Larkin's book is written in an accessible style which is suitable for first year undergraduate students but also allows more advanced students to appreciate the topic. The book provides clear definitions as to what the life course is and why it is important to view health in this way. I really appreciate the interdisciplinary approach discussed in this book.
This text provides accessible information about the life course to students. The summary boxes and further reading suggestions provide a helpful conclusion to each chapter
This is an excellent book that is very comprehensive in scope. However, it may be too advanced for the module my students are undertaking.
The previous edition of this book is being used to support a module on both the Post Graduate Diploma and BSc in Nursing. The module focuses on Development across the Lifespan and is delivered to mental health, child and adult nursing students.
The book provides clear definitions as to what the life course is and why it is important to view health in this way.
Culture is addressed although I would like this in more depth as students undertaking this course in an inner city area are constantly faced with differing cultural needs.
The sections on risk and lifestyle are well presented and useful for health care students who work in environments where risk assessment is a constant feature.
Presentation is clear and the discussion points and activities can be used to underpin either independent study work, presentations or seminar discussions.
This is a really rounded well researched text which offers the unusual... a 'health' related perspective across the life course. A very useful foundation text for students on health and social care courses and for practitioners.
I have read the book with a great interest in the interdisciplinary approach it endorses. As a sociologist of health and illness I especially welcome the integration of the social constructionism perspective and the social determinants of inequalities in health throughout the life course. Enriched by cases, activities and discussion points, it is an easy and fluidly to read textbook, also for the students of health sciences whose native language is not English. I am recommending it to our students.
This is an excellent book especially for post qualifying students who give holistic individual care. It acknowledges the challenges across the transition of life development.
