Language and Literacy for the Early Years
- Sally Neaum - Teesside University, UK
This is a focused text on early years' language and literacy for all students studying for degrees and foundation degrees in early childhood, early years and related disciplines and for candidates on EYPS pathways. It discusses language acquisition and development and covers development theory, talking with babies and the factors that affect development. Practical guidance on how to support children's language acquisition through rhymes, songs, story books and storytelling helps students see how theory links to practice. The text also examines the question 'what comes before phonics?' and includes interactive activities and theory focus features.
About the Early Childhood Studies Series
This series has been designed to support students of Early Years, Early Childhood Studies and related disciplines in popular modules of their course. Each text takes a focused look at a specific topic and approaches it in an accessible and user-friendly way. Features have been developed to help readers engage with the text and understand the subject from a number of different viewpoints. Activities pose questions to prompt thought and discussion and 'Theory Focus' boxes examine essential theory close-up for better understanding. This series is also applicable to EYPS candidates on all pathways.
Other titles in the series include Early Childhood Studies, Childhood in Society for Early Childhood Studies, Child Development for Early Childhood Studies and Exploring Play for Early Childhood Studies.
A well written and easily accessible book that will prove useful for students studying langauge acquisition and development. The inclusion of impact on reading and writing is particularly valuable to those working in the education section, and the focus on phonics is up to date and relevant. The 'definitions' of key terms is particularly useful throughout the book, and the case studies and activities make this a working, ongoing tool to aid progression.
Chapter 10 on rhymes, poems and songs will be recommended for reading to support a taught session on playful language from the Communication, Language and Literacy module.
This was a really useful introductory source for our first year students studying language development and was also useful on one of our SEN modules. I will be adding it to our reading lists and using it again.
Really accessible text book which helps learners engage with key topics covered in the text. Excelent reflective questions, activities and case studies again helping the elaqrners to engage with the topics and apply to practice. Helpful definitions of key terminology in each chapter too. A very user-friendly text.

A very accessible text for undergraduate ECCE students. Presented in a clear, concise style with plenty of activities included also.
Language and Literacy for the Early Years (2012) is an excellent core reading for the students studying their foundation degree. Sally Neaum links theory to practice impeccably through several hands on case studies and activities. This book is a fine addition to the Early Childhood Studies Series.
An extremely useful text which covers important aspects of early language and literacy in an accessible and interesting way.
A good starting point for EYFS students approaching these crucial areas.
An essential read for students studying Child Development .
