Counselling and Supporting Children and Young People
A Person-centred Approach

  • Mark Prever - Lead Professional, Every Child Matters, Yardleys School, Birmingham

February 2010 | 208 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
This book is the ideal introduction to counselling and supporting children and young people. Taking a person-centred approach, Mark Prever offers readers a clear understanding of the theory and practice of working with children and young people in difficulty - whether in a therapeutic, school or social work setting.

This practical text:

- specifically addresses both the counsellor and the 'helper', who may be unfamiliar with counselling jargon

- contains exercises, points for further thought and discussion, and boxed notes thoroughout, highlighting exactly how the theory applies to the child or young person

- discusses ethics, the current political agenda and evidence-based practice.

This book is a must-read for trainees and professionals working with children and young people in the fields of counselling and psychotherapy, education, mental health, nursing, youth work and social work.

This is a well structured and accessible text that enables students to make a solid connection between the theories they have been engaging with in the early part of their course and the practices they aspire to develop. I particularly like the distinction made in the text between those who are counsellors and those who are using counselling skills - this is extremely appropriate for my programme and I would like to see more texts that are aimed at those who are interested in incorporating counselling skills in their educational practices, rather tha becoming counsellors per se. There are lots of practical examples and thoughout provoking case studies and I thought the text encapsulated what a persona centred approach 'looks like'. I will be recommending this to my students in the Counselling Young People and Families unit

This was a basic introductory work which less experienced students would find helpful.

A useful supplementary to our key text for the "Talking and listening with others" module on the Foundation Degree in Learning Support. Useful chapters on working with feelings and emotions and unconditional positive regard.

I am recommending this as it is accessible to people who are not professional cousellors - I teach youth and children and family workers who spend a lot of time involved in pastoral care. It is well set out, easy to read with useful case studies. It is also the sort of text that would have relevant sections for a range of modules on courses that train people to work with children and young people in a range of contexts.

An excellent text for learning support students wishing to explore pupil support in more depth. Particularly useful for students undertaking dissertations relating to talking and listening in an educational context.

This book would be very useful for trainees, particularly those on a placement in a school setting. The person centred approach is evident both theoretically and practically.

Makes pertinent links between theory and practice. This offers opportunities for students to access information for different modules of study when working with children, young people and families.
