There is in consequence a similarly striking breath to the field reviewed. The title is somewhat 'retro' as the intellectual tradition is again reclaimed from policymaking, public sector management and other competing perspectives that have emerged. Great collection of top articles.
All in all the book matches the expectations resulting from the book title - as far as the book provides an excellent comprehensive overview and an in-depth discussion of major administrative aspects. It turns out the diversity of topics as well as continuities and changes in public policy, administration and management.
Also because of the diverse and specialized team of contributors the book procures a solid knowledge base and a good reference book for advanced(!) students and academics.
The structure of the single parts and articles is convincing, especially due to the basic introductions and the mostly illustrating “case studies” respectively the deepening with regard to contents. Nevertheless the book would benefit from additional advices concerning main authors, websites and articles/books relating to a topic.
It is possible to read the chapters as free standing parts. The book would be more convincing if there would be more respectively deeper references to other book chapters - for example between governance-reforms (p. 505) and multi-level-governance (p. 668-680).
Al in all the book fulfils the expectations and requirements of an handbook. It provides an overview and deepens selected aspects and cases. However some aspects are missing and reveal a specific view to the over-all topic. There is no chapter or sub-chapter referring for example to the Asian region.
