Peter Northouse’s Leadership: Theory and Practice wins a McGuffey Longevity Award from the Textbook & Academic Authors Association

April 28, 2016

Leadership: Theory and Practice by Peter G. Northouse has won a 2016 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award ("McGuffey") from the Textbook & Academic Authors Association (TAA). A SAGE Publishing text since 1997, Leadership: Theory and Practice is now in its seventh edition.

“It is a real honor to receive the McGuffey Longevity Award,” commented Northouse. “My goal with Leadership: Theory and Practice is to explore how leadership theories, which are constantly evolving, can inform and direct the way leadership is practiced. It is humbling to receive an award that recognizes the longevity of this work.”

Dedicated to acknowledging in-demand textbooks and educational materials that have been in print for at least 15 years, The McGuffey award recognizes works that demonstrate excellence in areas of pedagogy, content, writing, appearance, and design.

Translated into 12 different language and used in more than 89 countries, the market-leading Leadership: Theory and Practice covers major theories and models of leadership that readers may use in their professional and personal lives. Each chapter includes several case studies and a leadership instrument to help readers apply what they’ve learned. Furthermore, its consistent chapter format enables readers to make comparisons between key leadership theories.

“For almost 20 years, Dr. Northouse’s Leadership: Theory and Practice has provided readers with a trusted, research-based foundation and practical guidance on improving leadership practices in a variety of contexts,” commented Michele Sordi, Senior Vice President and Head of US College at SAGE Publishing. “It is a pleasure and an honor for SAGE to work with Dr. Northouse on each new edition. We are thrilled by this recognition, which is a reflection of the lasting influence of Dr. Northouse’s work in providing an accessible and comprehensive resource for anyone interested in understanding and building leadership qualities.”

The seventh edition, published in 2015, features new chapters on Adaptive Leadership and Psychodynamic Leadership. It includes expanded content on important topics such as gender and leadership, power and influence, the dark side of leadership, virtual teams, and shared leadership. The seventh edition is also available as an interactive eBook that contains study tools, links to multimedia and other exclusive content, questionnaires that provide students with recommendations for improving leadership skills, and many other features.
