What does science say about family relationships and how we can improve them? The SAGE Encyclopedia of Marriage, Family, and Couples Counseling

October 13, 2016

How can couples and families effectively navigate issues such as divorce, teen parenting, or job loss? Launching as a four-volume set, The SAGE Encyclopedia of Marriage, Family, and Couples Counseling covers an array of theories, approaches, and techniques in the field and applies them to various life events that affect families and couples.

“Not only has couple, family, and marriage counseling changed, but also the population of couples and families we work with are radically different,” write editors Jon Carlson and Shannon B. Dermer. “They are mobile; they are multicultural; they are more enmeshed with technology, particularly social media; as families, they are often smaller; and they are more diverse in terms of gender orientation and expression. This text educates people about family problems and so much more from parenting, to sex, to substance abuse, to immigrants and the impact of culture, the impact of gender, family stories and transgenerational patterns. There is so much to share.”

The SAGE Encyclopedia of Marriage, Family, and Couples Counseling includes more than 500 signed articles by experts in the field. Focused specifically on family therapy, the text is a landmark work for researchers and practitioners. Topics covered by the text include work/life Issues, coping, diversity, communication, sexuality, and more.

“We have been privileged to watch the field of couples, family, and marriage counseling/therapy develop and to grow along with it,” the editors continue. “It is so much more than what one of Jon’s early supervisors described as ‘individual psychotherapy with a few more people in the room.’”

Also included in The SAGE Encyclopedia of Marriage, Family, and Couples Counseling is a section on the history and development of the field, a detailed index, a selected bibliography of classic publications, and a resource guide to key associations, websites, and journals. The entries, grouped by theme in the text’s Reader’s Guide, all conclude with a section on Further Readings and cross-references to related entries. For more information, click here.
