'The book is completely student focused. I envisage students having the text on their desks when they attempt their written work, and this is very much how a study guide should be used' - Professor Keith Popple, London South Bank University

Study Skills for Social Workers
offers an accessible insight into the practical use of skills for study in a professional social work context. Engaging with students on their journey through the undergraduate or postgraduate qualifying course, it uses relevant case material from academic and social work perspectives to demonstrate the connection between study and practice. The book is comprehensive in its coverage of the core study skills, including guidance on:

  • Effective writing
  • Successful communication
  • Reflective study
  • E-learning
  • Learning in the workplace
  • Understanding feedback.

Written in a student-friendly style, Study Skills for Social Workers is interspersed with activities and exercises to enable students to practice and improve their skills as they move through the text. Also included is a glossary, and model answers to sample questions.

This book is excellent especially for mature students returning to education and studying social work. Having said that, I think that it is useful for for the duration of the course rather than when just starting out. There are many areas addressed in the book for example reflection to portfolios, that are not just areas covered in the first year of study. .

Dr Clare Beckett
Social Science and Humanities, Bradford University
August 13, 2010

A clear and concise breakdown of the skills that are required to become an effective practitioner

Mrs Rebecca Stinson
Health, Human Development & Community Studies, Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education
July 26, 2010

Given that the level of intake onto social work programmes of study is increasingly attracting 'mature' students, this source will be a very valuable asset to the learning process, as more & more older students are turning to social work & allied 'caring professions'. Thus, it is a timely publication designed to meet the learning & study needs of non-traditional students.

Dr John Stitt
Youth & Community Dev., University of Cumbria
July 23, 2010

Comprehensive, laid out in an accessible style. Will be useful for students and social workers alike.

Mr Martin Gill
School of Social Work and Psychology, University of East Anglia
July 22, 2010

An excellent study text for social work students which addresses both key academic skills and introduces those central to practice. It will be a most helpful text for students across their degree

Professor Sandra Drower
Interprofessional Studies, The University of Winchester
July 13, 2010

This is an excellent book for Year 1 Social Work students. It introduces them to the various elements of study that they will be working with from the beginning of the course. It's straightforward and down to earth and covers a lot of ground. It can be dipped into by students who are struggling with a particular element of study. It will also be useful for tutors in offering guidance to students

Ms Karen Vitler
Faculty of Health and Well Being, Sheffield Hallam University
July 8, 2010

This is a good, clear text offering useful and invaluable advice for Social Work students

Mrs Fiona Wilkes
BA (HONS) Degree in Social Work, North East Worcestershire College
June 22, 2010

this book will offer students a comprehensive source of knowledge and awareness of relevant skills that will enhance their experience as students, e.g. learning styles, written communication, time management. i thought the inclusion on online learning was excellent and long overdue. the reflective exercises made this text invaluable.

Mrs Linda Bruce
Applied social Studies, Robert Gordon University
June 11, 2010

A useful and comprehensive text for first year students.

Mrs Karen Matthews
