Dr Nick Midgley, Anna Freud Centre

This classic text has helped over 50,000 students wishing to understand the key counselling and psychotherapy approaches. This sixth edition is the most comprehensive update since it was first published in 1984, with 15 newly contributed chapters and 8 updated chapters. Each approach now includes a new Research section summarising the research findings, an in-depth Case Study illustrating how that approach works in practice, and an extended Practice section. Also covered:

· historical context and development

· main theoretical assumptions

· which clients will benefit most

· strengths and limitations.

New chapters include Compassion-Focussed Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Mindfulness in Individual Therapy, Pluralistic Therapy and The Transpersonal in Individual Therapy.

The handbook is rightly broad in its focus and provides a useful overview of various therapeutic models/approaches. There could be more detail on specific treatment techniques within individual therapeutic models with some therapist resources (e.g., worksheets where possible). This could potentially form part of an online resource for readers of the book.

A really good easy to read and easy to reference book. Very informative for learners studying at level 3 and above in my opinion. Good to look for specific theories or read from cover to cover

A very useful account of the various approaches to therapy outlining clear underpinning theoretical assumptions, strategies and techniques, critiques and further reading.

This is a superb text that introduces students to a wide range of therapeutic approaches. There are many elements that combine to enhance students' learning, including the brief historical background, case studies to anchor the concepts and techniques, and critical appraisal of the approaches.
