Edited by:

January 2013 | 248 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
This accessible, practical text provides mental health practitioners with the core knowledge and skills they need to be able to care effectively for the physical health of those who have been diagnosed with mental illness.

Linked closely to professional standards, and with a clear values- and evidence-base, the book aims to raise awareness of the physical health needs of individuals with mental health problems, outline the physical health assessment process and suggest health enhancing interventions for use in clinical practice. Consideration will be given to the following aspects of physical wellbeing;

- cardiovascular health

- diabetes

- sexual health

- respiratory health

- cancer

- wound care

- substance misuse

- infection control

- medicine management

Further chapters on legal and ethical issues explain the need to practise appropriately within the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act, while a linking theme throughout the book stresses the importance of health promotion.

Backed up by case examples and with a range of reflective exercises throughout, The Physical Care of People with Mental Health Problems is a key text for students and practitioners working in mental health services. It will also be useful reading for practice nurses, district nurses, midwives and all allied health practitioners.

Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) are increasingly caring for surgical patients who have mental health problems. Presently there is no requirement for ODPs to have any knowledge around mental health. However this book provides an excellent resource for those who wish to know more.

An excellent text for both mental health and adult nurses working within the mental health setting. It has been particulary informative in developing our understanding of the complex nature of physical well bieng often negelected within mental health and the challenges faced by those with severe and enduring mental disorders in ensuring their physical health needs are met

I have placed this on my essential reading list as it offers a broad overview of the physical health problems people with mental health concerns can encounter. I would recommend this for both pre and post registration courses.

A useful book that links theories to practice throughout by the use of action learning points which contain reflective exercises and case examples. This is a very practical book that explores the main physical health issues that people with mental health problems may encounter. This is a useful resource for trainees and practitioners in all fields of nursing and in a variety of settings. The learning outcomes at the start of each chapter are useful to help focus the reader. This is an excellent resource that a reader can dip into as the need arises .
