Dr Suzanne Grant is a Senior Research Fellow at the NICM Medicine Health Research Institute, and is a registered Chinese Herbalist and Acupuncturist with nearly 20 years’ experience. She holds a joint position in research at Western Sydney University and the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, a major cancer hospital in Sydney. She also practices one day a week at Lifehouse. Dr Grant is currently investigating options and outcomes in integrative oncology, and integrative health care. Dr Grant was CI on the recent partnership grant examining “Integrative oncology in Australia – exploring unmet needs and mapping service provision”. The projects she currently underway at the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse include: an RCT examining acupuncture for erectile dysfunction following radical prostatectomy, acupuncture and reflexology for anxiety, nausea and pain in patients undergoing chemotherapy, yoga for lymphoedema and symptom burden change in women with breast cancer receiving massage. At WSU, she is the lead investigator of an RCT examining acupuncture for cancer related fatigue, clinical pathways for people receiving integrative oncology therapies, and a review of mushrooms and cancer. She is the lead for the ongoing evaluation of Australian’s first academic integrative health centre at Western Sydney Integrative Health (WSIH) centre at Westmead WSU campus with a focus on people with cancer receiving integrative therapies. This mixed-methods study incorporates a patient registry, a broad range of primary measures, and data linkage with national datasets. The evaluation will aid in understanding if the integrative model health care delivery changes health outcomes and has the potential to demonstrate improved cost effectiveness and/or efficiencies while maintaining and/or improving patient outcomes, with a focus on translation of research outcomes into healthcare policy and practice.
