Becoming a Registered Nurse
Making the transition to practice

July 2012 | 160 pages | Learning Matters
Final-year nursing students are often nervous about making the transition to being a registered nurse. This book helps students prepare for their first nursing role and uses 'real life' scenarios to consolidate their skills. It guides students through the final year with its increased demands, and assists them in meeting the NMC requirements for registration. It covers content commonly found on final year transition to practice modules including coping with stress; applying for jobs; what to expect from your first role; dealing with change; delegating and managing junior staff; handling risky situations; managing priorities and developing your career.

A very helpful text for the student in their final year of pre-registration nursing education. It has some very good recommendations about making the leap from being a student to being an accountable, qualified nurse.

Essential reading for all student nurses who are about to qualify and nurses who have recently qualified. I wish I had owned a book like this when I was a new staff nurse.

We will use this for our Year 3 preparing for registration module in child health. It is practical, encouraging and motivating.

This an excellent book for the final year students and the novice practitioner alike. The chapters are well sign posted and have scenarios relevent to practice. The book highlights websites for further reading. I will be recommending this book to all my finalist.

The scenarios that weave the reader in to the narrative are particularly impressive. They resonate with authenticity and provoke the reader into thinking about how they would act in the professional context. As a result of reviewing this book we are going to be using this text on our third year modules for developing professional practice and making the transition into professional practice.

A neat little book that brings together so many strands that will help to unpick some of the mysteries of being a qualified nurse. It is easy to read, and specific topics can be found at a glance. A must-have for all nursing students.
