Commissioning for Health and Social Care

March 2014 | 280 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

This practical text takes you methodically and logically through the challenging task of commissioning and procuring public services across the health and social care sector. Split into four parts, it moves step-by-step through each stage of the commissioning cycle established by the Institute:

  •          Plan
  •          Do
  •          Review
  •          Analyse

Chapters include key terms which support learning, case studies which help you apply the theory to different contexts and exercises which encourage reflection.

The book is essential reading for those taking postgraduate courses in commissioning and those studying management and leadership in health and social care at postgraduate level. It is also valuable reading for professionals working in the health and social care sector.

This is a practical book for both new and established practitioners who want to gain understanding of the process of commissioning, or those who already contribute to the commissioning of health and social care services. It  helps to de-mystify the  process and provide  insight into the commissioning cycle and with useful learning outcomes, definitions, exercises and reflections for each chapter. Reading this evidence based systematic approach to commissioning will help those involved understand the process of planning and resourcing  to  improve outcomes for people.

Jane Quigley, Programme Leader Health and Social Care Commissioning, University of Chester

A useful resource which is packed with good examples. Students will be able to apply the exercises to their own organisation when asked to reflect on current practice.

Ann Saxon, Lecturer, University of Wolverhampton

This text shows great insight into the complexities of service provision. Postgraduate students will find this book beneficial and allows the student to understand the underpinning principles of leadership and management and how it applies to Industry.

I think this book comes as something of a disappointment. While the process of commissioning is provided in very clear terms the complexity involved is absent. Health and Social care commissioning presents a huge number of challenges which are just not given sufficient space within the text. The integration agenda is replete with fundamental organisational, strategic and operational challenges. They need more attention in this otherwise acceptable and useful book.

This gives clear understanding to what would be complex issues for students. Highly reccommended

Excellent book with extensive content.

Will be considered essential reading for the module originally considered and also a further module.

Worth noting marketed for Postgraduate but this will be classed as essential reading for both FdSc and BSc.

Excellent text book, that clearly explains the current commissioning situation. It is clearly written, with good diagrams and activities to support.

One of the only books on commissioning as a subject. Recommended to masters level students who are mainly from health and social care services
