The Journal of Human Lactation (JHL) is a peer-reviewed journal that welcomes papers on the widening field of topics pertinent to human lactation. Specifically, JHL publishes reviews, original research, original research (brief reports), student research, insights in policy and practice, commentaries, special reports, case reports, and letters to the editor as they relate to human milk, human lactation, lactation consulting, lactating mothers, breastfeeding infants, health outcomes, policy and practice. In addition, in each issue, JHL publishes Inside Track, a patient-focused, breastfeeding-related handout.

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jhl. Authors will be required to set up an online account on the SAGE Track system powered by ScholarOne. Manuscripts will be sent out anonymously for editorial evaluation. Obtaining permission for any quoted or reprinted material that requires permission is the responsibility of the author. Submission of a manuscript implies commitment to publish in the journal. Authors submitting manuscripts to the journal should not simultaneously submit them to another journal, nor should manuscripts have been published elsewhere in substantially similar form or with substantially similar content. Authors in doubt about what constitutes prior publication should consult the Editor-in-Chief.

Authors who would like to refine the use of English in their manuscripts might consider using SAGE Language Services. This service is open to any authors who need assistance cleaning up their paper and are willing to pay professionals for help. Please note that any costs incurred are the sole responsibility of the author and that using this service does not guarantee acceptance into the journal, but is intended as a resource for editing, translating, figure and text formatting, and other manuscript preparation needs.

Contributors to JHL should note that our author guidelines have recently changed, including an important update to APA format. Manuscripts submitted after July 15 should be formatted in APA style to be considered for publication. This change underscores the journal’s commitment to more clearly align with the values and mission promoted by ILCA and the community of IBCLCs it serves by providing access to quality research in the social sciences and humanities, alongside the excellent research in the health sciences for which it has been known. For more information on recent changes in the scope of JHL, please read the Editorial by the new Editor-in-Chief, Joan E Dodgson, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN, published in the May 2016 issue.
