  • Loren R. Tarantino - BTSA Statewide Directors State Leadership Team Leader, California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, Region 5, Sweetwater Union High School District, Chula Vista, CA

February 2005 | 168 pages | Corwin
Designed to help secondary school administrators and teacher leaders successfully implement new legislation (e.g. accountability, standards for professional development) for their schools, this book is structured around a four variable model for leadership (Vision, Instructional Leadership, Shared Decision Making, and Assessment and Accountability). Within each chapter, a framework of thirteen leadership attributes is shown to be integral to effective change and successful learning communities, and strategies for integrating these attributes into practice are included.

The practical, school-based nature of the book features activities, sample agendas, case studies, points to consider, reflection prompts and tips for successful implementation are included throughout. The 13 attributes include managing the change process and systems thinking, developing strong school culture, establishing action plans, developing staff, team building, peer coaching, assessing progress, using action research, effectively observing classrooms, involving parents, leveraging resources, and understanding the role of the district office.
