Theory, Practice and Reflection
- Warren Kidd - University of East London, UK
- Gerry Czerniawski - University of East London, UK
For trainee teachers studying to teach the 14 to 19 age group in secondary schools and colleges, this book is a practical guide covering the essential skills that must be acquired in order to successfully complete your course.
Five sections cover education policy, professional skills, theory, practice and reflection. The authors provide teaching ideas that work, and that will help trainee teachers to improve their grades and lesson observation profiles. There is a clear explanation of the theoretical underpinning that must be grasped in order to pass written assignments, and Masters level debates are addressed throughout the book, with a dedicated chapter exploring academic themes and issues.
The book is packed with ideas for classroom activities, and popular topics covered include:
- essential educational theory
- behaviour and classroom management
- how to start off lessons
- ideas for group work
- setting homework
- evaluating your own practice, and understanding how you can improve
- revising for exams
- working as part of a team
- using technology
All the chapters contain learning objectives, discussion points, examples from practice, Masters level extensions (for those studying at that level) and suggestions for further reading.
Suitable for all those studying to teach the 14 to 19 age range, this book is ideal for those on Secondary PGCE, PGDE and GTP courses leading to QTS, those studying for the post-compulsory sector PTLLS, DTLLS and CTLLS qualifications and those doing Overseas Teacher Training and Teach First courses.
Warren Kidd and Gerry Czerniawski are former teachers with experience of working in diverse settings; they are both Senior Lecturers in the Cass School of Education, University of East London.
This is a really comprehensive practice, helpful guide for new and trainee teachers. Good contextualised educational themes and issues throughout with reflective questions in each chapter to encourage reflective practice. The M-level thinking questions are also opportunities for professional development and guiding readers to requirments of studying at this level. The case studies used also give the book a 'personal, more intimate' feel hich is reassuring and beneficial for new and trainee teachers. Chapters 15 and 16 are crammed with lots of practical ideas and I particularly liked the thorough exploration of Bloom in practice in Chapter 17. Highly recommended and I have added it to my reading list for my trainees as a key text.
This book provides learner's with an excellent overview of 14-19 teaching. Easy to read, lots of references for further information. A must read for new teachers/trainers.
I liked the way the chapters are laid out, the text size is decent and the 'discussion points' are useful for students to carry out in class or as homework.
The Education Policy chapter is up to date and reflects current thinking and practice.
The chapter on classroom ideas that really work gives student teachers lots of practical activities they can carry out with their learners.
The technical chapter is also current and gives good advice and ideas.
I liked the thorough glossary and index.
This is a valuable book for anyone teaching 14-19 year olds.
An excellent introduction to teaching in the 14-19 sector.
This book has a wealth of practical ideas for teachers.
This book will be essential reading for any of our students who are working with this age range of students, as well as those undertaking this specialist module as part of their teacher training.
It has a clear layout that makes it very accessible.
There a some very interesting ideas for delivery and planning.
I love the practical ideas and will present some of these to the trainee teachers who are teaching other age groups.
This book will also be recommended to existing staff teaching this age group and those attending specific staff development.
A very comprehensive bok that covers many different areas.
This book will be recommended to our level 6 undergraduate students and our postgraduate students.
It will be particularly helpful when they begin teaching theoretical concepts within the classroom.
This is an essential for post compulsory teacher trainees who are now expected to teach 14 year olds.
The book is very helpful for new teachers because of the practical nature of the contents. it is written clearly and in manageable sections which differ from the standard 'teaching cycle' approach. It will be recommended to teachers who work in 14-19 environments.
I feel that this book is a no nonsense guide to teaching the 14 - 19 age group. One concern would be that with the change of government that the policies etc are likely to change readically so some of the information my become outdated. However, the ideas for classroom teaching and organisation are valuable and can be applied across the board not just at the older age groups. overall, a really valuable text.
A very practical book that would be suitable for first year students thinking about their practice prior to linking it with theory. I particularly liked the section on Elearning that is a welcome addition.
