By examining both strengths and weaknesses of each theory enables the students to develop their critical thinking and analyse different approaches. Furthermore, the exercises that are included within each chapter encourage reflective thinking, a key skill within the course.

This book is a must for all students completing a childhood studies degree. The theories are explained in full and is not overpowering to the student.

This book provides a structure that takes the reader through learning theories in an organised and thought-provoking way; yet also allows a reader to 'dip in' for specific information. It provides an excellent supplement to current core texts. I shall also be recommending that it is seriously considered as an up-date to our reading lists.

A really useful book for my Early Years students as the key philosophies of EY education are explored as well as learning theory and the changing landscapes in the 21st century. The weblinks and exercises are also useful.
I particularly like this book as it gives a slightly different angle on the well trodden path of books about learning theories. However, although it focusses on children, I have used it as a supplementary text for the year 1 Theory into Practice module of the DET/PGCE programme. Well written and informative.
I particularly like the way the authors note what they consider to be the strengths / weaknesses of different theoretical perspectives to encourage reflection, discussion and deeper understanding amongst those working with children. A thoroughly worthwhile read for students on BEd and PGCE programmes!
